Positioning Bird Feeders

Positioning of bird feeders / stations:

  • We recommend against positioning stations or feeders too near to hedges or shrubs as cats can use these as cover for attack. It should be remembered that some food debris from feeders will fall to the ground and in turn become a welcome source of sustenance for ground feeding birds. These ground feeders need to be protected by having an area of space around them, in case of attack by cats.

  • If hanging feeders from trees etc these should be at least 4 feet / 1.2 metres above ground.

  • To get the most enjoyment from watching the birds stations / feeders should be sited in view of your house whether kitchen or lounge. If situated at a distance viewing can be greatly enhanced with the aid of a pair of field glasses. This can really give a great insight to a wild birds features, appearance and mannerisms. Field glasses are also useful for spotting birds on the periphery / fringes of the feeding area and for a close up look at some of the very small birds.

  • We also recommend having several feeding sites situated around your garden. This can avoid overcrowding at anyone station / feeder and makes sure all the birds have an equal chance to feed. Also after watching wild birds for a while you will notice some are much more dominant than others, this applies to the same species (pecking order) and different species. So having numerous sites for your bird feeders can help the less “pushy” birds get a look in.

  • It is also helpful to move feeder sites from time to time to keep ground debris and bird droppings to a minimum.
