29/04/11 - RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch Results
Good news; the smaller bird species are making a come back after being hit very hard by the harsh winter of 2009/2010. Coal tit sightings increased by a quarter Goldcrests doubled and Long-tailed tits by a third. This year over 600,000 people took part, a new record.

19/01/11 - Big Garden Birdwatch next weekend
The RSPB annual nationwide garden bird watch is just around the corner on: Saturday 29th / Sunday 30th January. Further information and a handy printable bird ID sheet are available from the RSPB website.

New BTO Universal bird box / nest box and BTO Robin nest box now available in store. These are good quality bird boxes made from FSC certified timber.

28/08/10 - New BTO warning to keep Bird Feeders clean
The BTO have issued a new warning of the importance of keeping your bird tables and bird feeding station clean. The spread of Trichomonsis has killed half a million garden birds, mainly finches. The disease is common amongst Pigeons and Doves.
The BTO recommends that if you see a bird in your garden that is fluffed up, lethargic and having difficulty swallowing and/or drooling - you should empty your bird feeders and bird baths, disinfect them, allow them to air-dry.
I noticed a Greenfinch in my own garden with the above symptoms confirming the prevalence of the disease.

23/07/10 - Wild bird poisoning on the increase
A new RSPB study shows that the number of incidents of poisoning birds of prey is on the increase. Last year 21 Buzzards, 4 Red kites, 2 Golden eagles and a White-tailed eagle were poisoned.

01/06/10 - Help baby birds by keeping cats indoors
An appeal to Cat owners to help save baby birds from RSPB President Kate Humble. She advises keeping cats indoors mornings and evenings and putting bells around their necks. It's a constant battle keeping local cats from attacking wild birds in my garden.

23/04/10 - Keep your wild bird feeders clean. Recent research has highlighted the importance of keeping bird feeders, bird tables and bird baths clean. Dirty feeders and bird tables have helped spread diseases that have killed a fifth of the Greenfinches in Britain in recent years.
